Greve in Chianti
The Greve in Chianti town square is an odd town square as it is not square-shaped but rather triangular, with two charming porticos in each side and a huge statue of Verrazzano, the town's most famous son (the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge in New York was named after him). At the tip of the funnel is the Church of Santa Croce that houses a fine collection of paintings by the school of Fra Angelico and a 15th century triptych by Bicci di Lorenzo. For the wine-lover, Greve is the place to be everyday, but especially so during September when the biggest Chianti wine festival is held here.
For the art lover, Greve has a modest collection of art. The Museum of Sacred Art is located a short distance from the center of the town. From the square, you will see a beautiful castle. That is the village of Montefioralle, the most ancient in Chianti. The village itself is worth visiting as it is just one kilometer from the town of Greve. This ancient village is home to two medieval Romanesque churches - the Church of Santo Stefano, and Pieve di San Crescia Montefioralle. Some precious works of art may be viewed at the Church of Santo Stefano, like the Madonna with Child, The Trinity and the Four Saints, and a painting of the Virgin Mary with John the Baptist and Saint Stephen. Also a short distance from the square is the Verrazzano Castle, now a famous hotel and an equally famous restaurant.
