Elba Island - A Boat Ride Away

A couple on a mountain bike planning their next route

Getting to Elba

From a distance, Elba Island looks like a series of mountains jutting out of the sea.

To get here, one should naturally take a boat ride

from Livorno (5 hours), or Piombino (1 hour).

By Car to Piombino

From North:
Freeway A12 direction Genova-Livorno. Exit at Rosignano. Continue on the S.S Aurelia until exit Venturina - Isola d’Elba and from here continue to Piombino Marittima.

From North-East:
Freeway A1 direction Bologna-Firenze-Pisa-Livorno, exit at Rosignano.Continue on the S.S Aurelia until exit Venturina-Isola d’Elba and from here continue to Piombino Marittima.

An alternative route: Take the s.g.c. Firenze-Pisa-Livorno , exit at Firenze Signa and continue on the S.S (super street) until the Collesalvetti exit. Re-enter the freeway and continue to Rosignano Marittimo and there, take the s.s to Venturina and continue to Piombino Marittima.

From South:
Freeway A12, direction Roma-Grosseto.S.S Aurelia exiting at Venturina-Isola d’Elba. Continue to Piombino Marittima.

By Train to Livorno or Piombino and By Boat to the Island

To get here, take a train to Piombino. Any train that serves the Tyrrhenian coast will take you as far as the station - the Campiglia Marittimma. From here take the shuttle train that will take you as far as the Piombino port.

From the port, there are boats with hourly departures that will take you to Portoferraio, the island's capital and only city. For those who don't mind the extra fare, and if you are not bringing a car, a hydrofoil operated by Elba Ferries will take you to the island in less than 30 minutes.

Two companies that provide the ferry services are:

  • TOREMAR with offices at Via Calafati 6, Livorno (tel. 0286 896 113)
    Calata Italia 23, Elba (tel. 0565 918080):
Piazzale Premuda, Piombino (tel. 0565 31100):

  • NAVARMA, also at Piazzale Premuda in Piombino, Tel. 0565 221212

By Plane

You can also book a flight to the island, if you are coming from Germany, Switzerland, or Austria. Those coming from the Italian cities of Milan, Pisa, and Florence can also take advantage of this direct route to the island.
